There are conflicting stories
as to who actually began breeding the first Labradoodle. Some
credit Wally Cochran and some credit Don Evans but most people
agree that the breed was started in the early 1970's in Australia.
The first Labradoodle was bred from a Labrador Retriever and a
Standard Poodle for the purpose of using the dog for a blind woman
in Hawaii who needed a low allergy Guide Dog.
In the 1980's, two research facilities were established in
Australia for the purpose of researching and breeding the Labradoodles.
Tegan Park and Rutland Manor were developed and are now currently
exporting Labradoodles all over the world to asthma and allergy
sufferers.
Today, many people are enjoying the benefits of this wonderful
new breed. Labrador's are very easy going and Poodles are very
smart. The resulting Labradoodle from the combination of the
two breeds makes for a wonderful, non-aggressive family dog
that is easy to train.
Coat types vary within the litter. Some may be flat, wavy,
or curly. Generally, the more wavy or curly the coat the less
shedding will occur and the more allergy friendly the dog will
be. No puppy can be guaranteed not to shed or be hypo-allergenic.
Allergies can be either to saliva or to dander so it is important
to consider this when purchasing a Labradoodle puppy.
Here at Labradoodlesville, we breed only first generation
Labradoodles. As Dr. Kate Schoeffel, a foremost breeder of Labradoodles
in Australia has written "First cross dogs do not 'breed true'.
If you cross two 'Labradoodles' the puppies will be a mixed
bunch and only a few will resemble their parents. If you want
to breed 'Labradoodles" you have to cross a Poodle with a Labrador
or you will have to spend years inbreeding to fix the type you
want to breed".
